Dr. Grenda earned his MD and PhD degrees at Washington University in St Louis, focusing his graduate studies on neutrophil cell biology, followed by a residency in anesthesiology and fellowships in critical care anesthesiology and cardiothoracic anesthesiology obtaining substantia experience with ECMO and other advanced forms of life support.  Prior to medical school, he worked for 2 years as a hospital chaplain while completing graduate studies in theology.  He has also been heavily involved in clinical ethics, both at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis and at Emory University Hospital.  He has an interest in long-term outcomes in ECMO patients after their discharge.
