Biography

Dr. Powell trained at Emory University in Internal Medicine and then completed fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine. She spent nine years doing both outpatient pulmonary medicine and inpatient pulmonary and critical care medicine in the Wellstar health system in Marietta, GA. There she provided care for critically ill patients from the time they presented to the emergency room at Kennestone, Wellstar’s tertiary care hospital.   In 2008 she became an Intensivist at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA.  While at Piedmont, she developed an interest in advanced methods of cardiopulmonary support, including mechanical support devices and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. She assisted in developing the ECMO program at Piedmont.  In 2014, Dr. Powell decided to return to academic medicine and the opportunity to assist Emory with the implementation of its ECMO program and with the care of its critically ill patients.
